There is always a reason to pass up an opportunity to volunteer. There is seldom a good reason for doing so. If you search carefully, you will find certain characteristics that make small towns desirable places to live. Always, one of the top 3 items is that they have community involvement on everything from school boards and village councils to arts organizations and youth sports programs. Dexter is one of those places.
I often find myself in conversation with folks around town talking about one of the groups that I already mentioned. I end up by saying, "You know, you should offer to take on a small project that you can handle." Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Quite often I hear back from them with a simple, "I'm glad I did that."
The next time your child comes home from practice or a game, and they're all excited about it, talking about a particular event or showing you the move they learned, ask yourself, "Can I do a little something to help?" I'll bet you can.
